My top tips for helping clothes last longer

Posted by Holly Gardner on

I started byMATTER with a simple idea: what if we looked after our clothes the way we look after our skin — with care, intention, and good ingredients? So much energy goes into making the things we wear, yet we treat them as disposable. I wanted to create products that help people hold onto what they already own — to extend the life of clothes, reduce waste, and make everyday care feel beautiful.

We focus on fabric care that works, without the harsh chemicals — whether that’s protecting against moths or refreshing between washes. It’s all about making it easier to do the right thing, both for your wardrobe and for the planet.

Here are my top tips for helping your clothes last longer:

1. Don’t overwash!
This is probably the biggest one. Overwashing fades colours, breaks down fibres, changes the original shape of garments and shortens the life of your clothes. If something isn’t visibly dirty, it often doesn’t need a full wash. A quick air-out or a refresh spray can work wonders — I developed Another Day to do exactly that.

One customer hadn't washed her cashmere sweater for 5 years thanks to Another Day, and it still looks brand new today.

2. Use gentle, natural-based cleaning products

Harsh chemicals don’t just harm your health — they’re also tough on fabrics. Over time, they break down fibres, fade colours, and can even leave residue that affects how clothes feel. I always look for natural alternatives that are proven to work. Ingredients like probiotics, for example, clean effectively without being aggressive. They’re a great option for keeping your clothes fresh and cared for, without compromising their longevity.

3. Protect against moths

So many people don’t realise they have an issue with moths until there are holes and it's too late.

Certain scents — like lavender and cedarwood — actually smell like poison to moths. Using these natural deterrents is a simple and effective way to keep them away. I keep my wardrobe protected year-round with Closet Guardian, which we created using scents that moths can’t stand — but that add a fresh, beautiful fragrance to your space.

4. Store your clothes like they matter

The way you store your clothes has a huge impact on how long they last. I always use breathable garment bags for special pieces, fold heavy knits instead of hanging them, and avoid plastic wherever I can — it traps moisture and can lead to mustiness or mildew. For everyday storage, I keep wardrobes tidy and spaced out so fabrics can breathe. It’s not just about organisation — it’s about protecting your investment and keeping your wardrobe fresh.

5. Sew & Repair

You don’t need to be a sewing expert. I’ve learnt how to do simple things like reattach a button or fix a small hole, and it’s satisfying. Plus, you feel more connected to your clothes when you care for them in that way.

Final words:

With the rise of fast fashion we’ve lost the habit of keeping things — especially clothes. But some of the most meaningful pieces in our wardrobes are the ones that have lasted: a coat passed down, a dress worn year after year. If we start treating our clothes with more care, they can have a life beyond us. That’s the heart of what I’m building with byMATTER — helping people protect the things they love, so they’re still around for the next generation to wear, share, and enjoy.
